What is a microadventure?

A microadventure is an idea based around exploring one’s own local “backyard”, as opposed to engaging in costly, resource-guzzling exotic vacations. To quote inspirational adventurer Alastair Humphreys: “Adventure is only a state of mind. Adventure is stretching yourself; mentally, physically or culturally. It is about doing what you do not normally do, pushing yourself hard and doing it to the best of your ability. And if that is true then adventure is all around us, at all times. Even during hard financial times such as these. Times, I believe, when getting out into the wild are more enjoyable, invigorating and important than ever.” Microadventures are essentially adventures that are small and achievable for all people with real lives.

Why microadventure?

Microadventures are appealing because they make adventure more accessible to people who have perceived time and resource limitations. You don’t need to travel to the opposite end of the earth to find adventure. You don’t need money or much time. Adventure can be found in your local community no matter where you live, all you need is a little imagination and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. Microadventures are also a sustainable alternative to traditional tourism, since they don’t require using resources to fly to a far away destination and are kept local on purpose. They are also a way to support local businesses and provide a local economic catalyst.

Who can achieve a microadventure?

The beauty of a microadventure is that anyone can do it! Whether it is a college student seeking his or her next mountain to hike or a mom that is looking to take her children on a fun afternoon outing, anyone is capable of doing their own microadventure. A microadventure can be great for a newlywed couple that is wanting to explore a new town they have moved into or for someone who has lived in the same area for years. There are always new adventures waiting for anyone who wants to get a bit of fresh air and learn about the surrounding area around them.

Where can this microadventure be done?

Since the idea of a microadventure is to travel locally, a microadventure can be done by just walking out your front door! There are endless microadventures that are waiting to be done in your local area or if you would like to travel by car Washington state has an enormous selection of trails, hikes, or different activities that are very accessible.

When can you go on a microadventure?

The true beauty lies in the fact that you can go on a microadventure every day! The idea of microadventures is that you can go on a mini trip with whatever time you have available. This could be a whole week, a weekend, a single day, or even an afternoon or evening after work! With microadventures, you can find time in every single day to get out and enjoy what your local environment has to offer.

How do you microadventure?

The secret to microadventures is…just get out! There is beauty, fulfillment, and fun in every nook and cranny of the outdoors, so don’t worry too much about going on a “perfect” microadventure. Simply get off your bum and get outside, and the fun will assuredly follow. Go to that park in your town you have never been to, or go check out the beach on the other side of town that is an extra 10 minutes of driving. We have a variety of adventure suggestions on this website, but nothing is better than going out and making your own trail. As John Muir said, “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.”
